Aeration is probably the most important treatment that is needed by your lawn. It allows water and air to get to the roots of the grass by opening up air holes into the soil as well as relieving compaction.

There are two main types of aeration, hollow coring where a plug is removed and solid tining which simply places a spike in the soil. The latter method is not nearly as effective and can actually create more compaction in your lawn.

After hollow coring your lawn, it will look like it has bullet holes all over it. It will quickly recover especially if the aeration is accompanied with an application of organic soil conditioner, which will get right down to the roots of the grass. The plugs are left on the grass as they break down quickly during the winter rains and return organic matter and nutrient to the soil.
